Grilled Fish Tacos

First, why are these so healthy? Well, for one, they are grilled, rather than the typical fried variety, and the fats in the fish are great for our health and help reduce inflammation. Second, rather than being topped with loads of cheese and sour cream, they are topped with an amazing crunchy and zesty slaw that is full of flavour and loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. Last, the yogurt drizzle gives us the benefits of probiotics. This recipe uses good-quality fats, like extra virgin olive oil, that support heart health. These are definitely tacos you don’t have to feel guilty about, but rather should use to celebrate!

  • Yields: 4 Servings

Ingredients

4 pieces of fish (choose a fatty fish like salmon for added nutrition)

1 tbsp chili powder

8 corn tortillas (choose organic if possible)

¼ head of cabbage sliced very thin (use a mandolin if you have one)

½ red onion sliced very thin

2 cloves of garlic chopped fine

¼ cup cilantro chopped

¼ jalapeno chopped

3 limes

3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1 cup plain yogurt

Sea salt and pepper to taste

Directions

1In a large bowl, mix together the cabbage, onions, 3/4 of the garlic, 1/2 of the cilantro, and the jalapenos. In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil and the juice of 2 limes; whisk together to create the dressing. Pour the dressing on the cabbage salad and mix thoroughly. This can be dressed ahead of time, the flavours will come together, and it is great left over.

2In a bowl, mix together the yogurt, remaining garlic, cilantro, and juice of 1/2 a lime. Season with sea salt and pepper and set aside.

3Season your choice of fish (preferably one like salmon with good fats in it) with sea salt, fresh pepper, and some chili powder. Grill the fish on medium low until just cooked through. Depending on size, the fish should only take about 7 minutes, so time it with the rest of the meal. Use the last 1/2 lime to serve with the fish at the table.

4Warm the corn tortillas on the grill or in the oven in parchment paper to keep them moist. Serve family style and let everyone make his or her own tacos. A great side to accompany this meal would be a black bean salad and some guacamole.
