Chromium—The Next Big Thing

It is quite possible that chromium might just be the next big thing in the world of nutrition and wellness. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) two-thirds of the American population is either overweight or obese. These conditions are directly linked to an increased risk of other diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cholesterol issues.

Research has shown that the supplement chromium picolinate is effective in helping to manage various aspects of diabetes such as reducing blood glucose, insulin, and cholesterol. In other words, chromium can help balance blood sugar levels, resulting in many health benefits. When we stabilize blood sugar levels it’s common for our cravings for sweets and other refined foods to be reduced—while chromium is suspected to aid in weight management for this reason, at this point, it is still being studied.

Although supplementing with chromium picolinate may be advisable, chromium is also found in a variety of foods such as raw onions, oysters, spinach, eggs, and whole grains. Since chromium is often destroyed through food processing, it’s important to consume sources of fresh unprocessed food.

Head to your favourite oyster bar tonight and get your daily dose of chromium to protect yourself against diabetes and other chronic diseases.
